Mallorca Hotels
Majorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands, being 3,640 Km2 with over 5,500 Km of coastline. It also lies off the East coast of mainland Spain, in the Mediterranean Sea, along with its close neighbouring islands of Ibiza and Menorca. The Island is divided by an extensive mountain range, cutting from the Northwest to the Southwest, and so isolating the central agricultural areas from the secluded beaches and rocky Alcúdia bay in the north.
Tourists often get confused by the difference in Mallorca's names; the original, traditional name of the island is Mallorca, which is used by the locals and intimates the vibrant life and culture that can be found almost everywhere, whereas Majorca is the name that was adopted by foreign visitors who found it difficult to pronounce the Spanish version.

Palma, the island's capital, has a population of approximately 300,000, which is practically half of the entire population of the island. It stretches some 15 km along the coastline, from El Arenal and Palma beach in the east as far as the cosmopolitan districts of Cala Mayor and San Agustivities of all kinds are more than well-catered- for here. There are restaurants, cafeteries, pubs, concert halls, discotheques, a bull-ring and all types of shows, offering the visitor entertainment and amusement at all times.
Tourism had already become an important aspect of life on the island of Majorca back in the early 1920's although on a much smaller scale than today, of course. It was a select, mainly winter tourism which grew up steadily until the begins of the Spanish Civil War. The later "discovery" of Ibiza and Menorca did not occur until well after the Civil War. At that time Majorca was full of artists, who established what was, to all intents and purposes, a colony in and around Pollensa and its port.

One of the most famous of them all was Anglada Camarassa. That conglomeration of artists and poets at Pollensa was to bring about something previously unheard of in island tourism - the construction in 1929 of the Hotel Formentor. It was promoted by the Argentinian entrepreneur Adan Dihel, who even suffered personal hardship in his determination to build the finest hotel on the Mediterranean, near a beach which was not really considered the most adequate place for rest and relaxation. The Hotel Formentor brought about a previously unimaginable change in the island's tourist industry, and was soon imitated by the Hotel Cala Dor and the Gran Hotel Camp de mar. These new hotels successfully joined forces with the already-existing Hotel Victoria Gran Hotel de Palma and the Hotel Prp.
Majorca contains every possible variety ranging from long and sandy beaches at the South to the cliffs from the Tramuntana mountain range. The island landscapes are not merely sun, pools and lawn chairs, although there are plenty of them for our visitors. Majorca offers protected areas of about 40% from its territory: Natural Park of S'Albufera, Dragonera Island, Natural Park from Mondrago, Cabrera Island and the whole Tramuntana mountain range, which crosses the island from North to South.

The white colour from almond trees, late January and early February, covers the flat fields like the snow that covers the peaks of the highest mountains in winter, some years. In March and April the yellow from the first wild flowers invade the brown of the earth and the green of the meadows. During Spring the red poppies explode in many different shades of red. Rosemary flowers of violet precede summer. Many brown shades in the leafs of perpetual foliaged trees announce the arrival of Autumn.
During Winter the mild climate permits training seasons for those fond of cycling, golf, riding, etc. There are horse competitions like Her Royal Highness Princess Helen Trophy, or horse races at race-courses of Palma and Manacor. The island offers also good conditions to other minority sports or adventure sports like Delta Wings, Parachuting or Ultra Light planes. However, the most important sports are those related to the sea. Majorca is fully devoted to the sea, here you could find more than 20.000 moorings. Sailing, scuba diving, water skiing, fishing, windsurf, among other compose the supply of marine sports. Nevertheless, do not forget about tracking, mountain bike, and many kinds of excursions that are typical of active touring.
